Bible Passage: Matthew 23: 23

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrite s! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Jesus faced different types of people during His time. We have the same kinds of people even today.
  • Scribes
Matthew : 7: 29; Matthew : 9: 3
Prayed for pretense.
Form of godliness/spirituality.
  • Pharisees
They gave great stress on rituals and traditions.
They had only the form of godliness and piety.
They believed in resurrection but did not know the full gospel.
They outrightly rejected the counsel of God (Luke 7: 30).
  • Sadducees
Mark 12: 18 - 27 - Found fault with Jesus
These people were critics of Jesus but were perfect in giving tithe.
Matthew 3 - John the Baptist, knowing the hearts of these people called them hypocrites. He asked them to repent, be baptized and give fruits worthy of repentance. Axe is kept at the root.
Nicodemus - John 3
Was a Pharisee, who desperately desired for salvation. Jesus said that he has to be born again by water and spirit. He obeyed and had a change of character and life.
Zaccheus - Luke 19
Being a tax collector, repented and accepted Jesus Christ.
Matthew : 23 : 23
The Scribes, Pharisees and Sadducees were perfect in their tithe but omitted the weightier things. That is,
  • Judgement - Isaiah 56: 1
  • Mercy
    • John 8: 2 - 12 - Jesus was merciful to the woman who was caught red handed in adultery.
  • Faith
    • John 11 - If you believe, you will see the glory of God.
    • Hebrews 11: 6 - Impossible to please God, without faith.
